Hi beautiful people,

Please I need your help identifying this Rattlesnake....I´ve never seen it before in my ranch. I´m no snake expert but I´m pretty sure it´s not like the other ones I have seen. This one has a different pattern and has a little orange on its belly. I´m really interested in finding out because I´m studying biology and this would be a new find in my region.

Thank you soooo much.

Would be easier for everyone if you could say where exactly you are?

Hi Lankyrob

I live in the state of Durango in Mexico.

It is difficult to see the details, but I think there are two “horns” above the eyes. The only rattlesnake with elevated supraoculars into pointed hornlike structures is the sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes). The dark stripe which is running from the eye to the corner of the mouth seems to be faded, but you can see it. The coloration is also within the known color range.

Could you see the horns above the eyes? If yes, than it has to be the sidewinder. If there were no horns, it might be another rattlesnake, but then we need the information where you took the picture.

Do you live in northern Mexico? The distribution range of Crotalus cerastes is from the southwestern US to northwestern Mexico (western Sonora and eastern Baja California).
