Hello everyone!

I'm super excited, just bought another BP from the East which will be arriving on Monday! He's not a normal but he will be a great addition to my breeding plans, plus he looks so sweet :bouncy:

Time for some suspense, care to take any guesses? I'll give you a hint...the ingredients involve 2 different genes: 1 gene is dominant, the other is co-dominant.

Whoever guesses correctly gets a cookie. :D

No worries ;) And thanks! He was supposed to arrive yesterday but things changed, talk about testing my patience..haha :p

Hahaha you are sooo right! Although the pattern is pretty interesting on this guy ;)

Thanks :)

So today is the say! Just waiting for the package to arrive, and I'm getting impatient!

Any guesses before he arrives?

Bumble Bee?!

Is there any Enchi or Banana in there?

Kera

I was thinking bumble bee too but what I don't know genetics very well ;P

Hurrok

Nope, no Bees this time! Sadly no Banana (I wish!).

Another hint:

You can use these 'ingredients' in baking.

Yes! You got the cinnamon, only one more gene to guess. The hint goes for that one as well :p No caramel, or banana. (making me hungry haha)

The only thing I can think of is vanilla.

Hurrok
11-26-13, 04:36 PM
Nope, sorry not Vanilla! It's something you can sprinkle on or add to a recipe in baking/cooking.

We are expecting a little Cinnamon Sugar male this evening. I will try and get some pics before he goes to into his cage. :)

Alright so here he is! Safe and sound :)

Only managed to get a few good pics, my camera doesn't like dim lighting...so there is some with flash, some not.

Another update: He has shed once and keeps on eating with no problems :)
However I guess I didn't put the lid on his tub on all the way and he was missing for 2 weeks!

Found him today on our heat register....gave him a bath and he took a big slurp in the process here: Ball Python Drinking - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3US3a58A9c&feature=youtu.be)

Ended up naming him 'Castiel'. Was watching a lot of the Supernatural series :p

Castiel has to be one of the most calm snakes that I own. He doesn't shy away from your hand and seems very curious. Usually they are quite head shy but not this guy!
He's so tiny that he fits into a hoodie pocket, so he's my little pocket buddy haha.

Here he is in shed, I'll get some pics of him when it's a nicer day to get some good natural light.

He's an awesome looking little guy!! I really want to add a Hypo-Amel and a Cinnamon or Super Cinny to my collection. But he's so pretty too!! Wonder what I could do with a sugar.........hmmmmmmm!!!!

Hurrok
01-24-14, 05:49 PM
Thanks! I've been wanting to add either the sugar or calico gene to my collection, and once I saw him I had to have him! The super cinnys are so pretty, plus I have a nice pewter girl that I'd like to breed him to once she is ready. Can't wait for the babies!! :D

Isn't genetic math FUN!!! My fiance thinks I'm nuts, but I love playing with the genetics to see what I can make, and what I need to make what I want. SOOOOOOOOO much fun!!

Hurrok
01-24-14, 06:27 PM
Genetics is probably one of the main things that got me into ball pythons! To be able to put two different morphs together and create a combination of the two is just incredible! Plus they are just too cute and are such unique pets, I never tire of them :)

I can't wait to have eggs, it will be like christmas! All the little eggs like little presents waiting to be opened, and seeing what's inside makes me excited :D

I know, I feel the same way. The only sucky part is not really being able to handle my females too much. I want them to have a stress free and successful breeding season, so I must content myself with handling those not breeding this year and my Juvi's (I know, what an inconvenience, right!! LOL)

I am already thinking of next years projects. I think my spider MAY be big enough by next year, but I don't have a male ghost to prove/disprove her PH, which sucks. My POG will definitely be ready, although if my Spider isn't, then I haven't decided who to pair him with, I got him with the plan to pair him with my spider for Honey Bees, but I guess only time will tell. My male pinstripe should be ready for next season, but I haven't a clue who I am going to match him with yet.

I really need a male ghost, and I really want a cinnamon or super cinny female, and a Hypo-Amel female and a male Enchi. OH and a champagne, probably female. Although a local breeder actually has a male Champagne Enchi that piques my interest!

My Mohave female and my Mystic male will most likely not be ready next season (I seriously doubt it) So I won't be pairing them until probably 2016 season. But when I do.......... Mystic Potions, here I come!! YAAY!!

I handle all my snakes at least a couple times a week, just to let them get out and wander around and get some form of exercise. It has taken awhile to get the females up to size (I want them to be over 1,500 grams before breeding them) but it has been worth the wait. I can't believe it has been 3 years since I got my first BP! I won't be breeding this season (was hoping to) but I just don't have the proper space for an incubator and the babies so maybe next season :) Still can't help but be excited though!

Honeybees are really pretty, my first snake was a spider male so I can't wait to either pair him with my pastel, or my pewter! But the one pairing I really can't wait for is this guy paired with well...pretty much any female I have. I absolutely love the sugar gene and how it 'warps' the pattern and adds oranges and lots of white to the animal.

Champagne's are pretty nice too! And the Enchi gene really cleans things up so that would be a nice addition! We have a Champagne Mojave but 'he' turned out to be a 'she' so it will probably be a few years before she will be up to size. She's a picky eater and had a pretty rough start when we got her. She was not even 70 grams at 4 months old...such a shame. Never getting anything from that breeder again!

Ahhh Mystic Potions are just gorgeous! I want one so bad! haha :p It's all so exciting! And it's not even about the money, bringing new life and taking care of these guys is rewarding enough :) Money is just a nice bonus!

What a pretty morph! I can't wait to see post-shed photos!

Thank-you! I will try and get some photos up this week :)

Yes, I love to handle all my snakes on a weekly basis, but the 6 that are breeding right now, I just kind of want to leave them alone except for feeding. I can't wait until I get to breed my pair that will make the Mystic Potions, they are GORGEOUS snakes!!!

Definitely makes sense! I'm sure one breeding actually happens I will leave them be :p It's difficult not to sometimes though! They really are, I love the Purple Passions as well, just breathtaking!

No such thing as a "co-dominant" trait in ball pythons.

Only dominant and incomplete dominant.

Haha well you got my support on that!

I've heard a lot of people using the term 'co-dominant', is there a certain reason for the terminology change? I have to be honest, it's the first time I've heard the use of 'incomplete dominant'. Wouldn't that just be recessive then?

Good question.

Terminology change is because the actual definition of "co-dominant" is different then what we use it to describe.

"Incomplete dominant" is appropriate be definition.

You are on the right track as recessive and incomplete dominant work the same way. Recessives just don't have visual hets. But the genetic punnets square works for both just the same.

Even if we use the term "co-dominant" the application of the way recessive works applies as well.

We are just using the proper definitions now.

And if this is the first you've seen of it then you're hanging around the wrong circles :P

True.

It's because a lot of them just don't care. They know next to nothing about genetics for real and don't care to learn.

The information is out there but they just don't care. Some even know the truth and still don't care to start changing it. Oh well.

In co-dominance, an additional phenotype is produced Codominance= condition in which both alleles for a gene are expressed when present
wouldnt a super pastel be an examplpe of this? showing both pastel genes to make a superpastel?
im still trying to get a firm grasp on the whole genetics department but ive also only really herd of dominant co-dominant and recessive,
