Striking out

So ive been noticing that Sir Hiss [Dumeril] has been striking at people while im holding him. He doesnt strike at me only when some one moves close to us.

Im usually the only one who holds him but he will go from me to my boyfriend and he doesnt seem to bother him. But he has lunged at my mom a few times and hit her with his head once. And anyone else that happens to get close while im holding him. I hold him a couple times a week, never before feeding and not 48hrs after.

Hes the only snake ive had and have no issues other than this, is there a way i can woke on this without someone getting bit? :hmm:

You are like a tree to the snake when you are holding him, everyone else is a threat to the snake and it is defending itself. The snake is doing what a snake does. You are stressing the snake out. Remember, snakes do not like to be held, they tolerate it. Some may appear to like it, but they just want our body heat.

I would also like to offer that those around you (that he is striking at) need to be very conscious of their movements and voices. I had a similar young pine snake who would get very upset and striking whenever people nearby were 'talking with their hands'. all the snake sees are these big things moving around really fast in front of him, of course it is scary. Additionally, deep voices can travel via vibrations to your snake and make him feel insecure, so that is another thing to think about.
Some snakes are just more nervous than others. good luck.

My dum does not strike (any more) but gets nervous when another person comes near when I hold him.

I had a ball python that was like that... he was always relaxed around me but everyone was just another predator

What SSSSnakes and Starbuck said every snake is different some tolerate more than others yours seems to be more defensive not aggressive. Don't rush the taming it will take time.
