View Full Version : question about my sand boa
I bought my sand boa as a juvenile and ever since now(Ive had her about a year now) she ate every week np I had her in a 40 gallon tank the tall one. Started her on pinkies and about 3-4 months ago she was eatting small fuzzies.. all frozen food.
I recently moved her into a short 40 gallon tank because i like the exo terro brand those pull out doors are great. But now my sand boa wont eat its been about 3-4 weeks. Idk if its because of the new tank or I read people say some of there snakes dont eat for awhile becasue of brumation.
She has been acting like normal so I don't know why she isnt eatting only difference is when i try to fed her she just ignores her food and moves away.
If you feed her in the tank, can she find the food easily enough? Are you giving it to her directly? How do you normally feed her?
Did anything else change in the tank (like a new heating pad, new substrate, etc.)?

A 40 gallon is huge, even for an adult female. She may not feel secure enough in order to feed. Can you post a picture of your sand boa? The prey size also may not interest her, may be time to bump her up to hoppers or maybe weanlings, depending on her size. Also, what are her hot spot temps?

Did anything else change in the tank (like a new heating pad, new substrate, etc.)? Yes I've always fed her in the tank I used tongs and wiggle the mouse in front of her mouth and she would always take it willingly.
I use to use over the top heating light in the 40 gallon tall tank but in this 40 gallon low tank i have the Under the tank heating pad for the hot side, and a small red bulb for the cool side.

Also, what are her hot spot temps? but ive had her in a 40 for the year ive had her and all of a sudden she just stopped eating but all her habits are the same she moves well and even comes out when its time to eat but when i try to feed her she just is not interested in what i have to offer. Even tonight i tried the toothpick in the brian trick to try to get the smell out more and she seemed to notice the smell but just didnt want to eat the mouse. Maybe i should tyr upping the size of the prey and even try live prey :/ but she always been on frozen.( and yes i thaw it out in warm water for 15-20 mins then put it on top of her tank for like 30-40 to get the smell around the tank)
Plus she seems to look like she is the same weight. Im feeding her Small mice for about 2-3 months b4 she stopped taking them. and they are still about the same size of her main body. Why im hesitant on going the next size up.and my hot temp side is 94-96 cool is 80-83..
Im thinking of calling the vet tmrw or just trying bigger food never had this problem b4 :/

Just thought of something......are you sure you have a female? Males will go off feed when they become sexually mature and are looking to breed at this time of year.
I bought her online and asked for a female.. I was thinking the same thing as you some people online went as from as saying it could be burmation when i was google searching possible problems. but she doesnt seem like it wants to hibernate lol because of how active she gets at times. And i also read thats with females to when they sexual mature they wont eat for awhile. I have a rosy boa male around the same age and he eats every week same time nps he is a great eater he knows when he is getting fed and recognizes when its time to eat its pretty cool to be honest.

The only time my females go off feed are when they're gravid; or going into a shed cycle. any chance you could get a picture of the underside of the tail, from the vent to the tip? Should be easy for me to tell if you have a male or a female, if its over a year old already :)
i put a live mouse in there 2day hoping shell take it she missed it once she striked at the mouse.. 1st time she strike at something since the last time she ate.. she hasnt ate it yet but maybe your right about the size of the food im going to try to buy bigger frozen mice the medium ones and offer that to her. Also i was looking at her tail she has a short stubby tail like a female so she is a female.
