I have been trying to decide which subspecies i want and I read somewhere that jungles tend to be more arboreal than coastals and that coastals tend to spend more time in their hides. Is this true? If so, it looks like I'm sold on a jungle.

Yes...
Jungles are more arboreal.... Don't know about the coastals spending more time in the hide.

I have no experiences with coastals but I own a Jungle carpet and Irian Jaya carpet. Both of them are always in the upper half of their enclosures, and only go down when they are in shed or trying to cool off.

We found our jungle was morere arboreal when young but as he got older he spent more and more time either in his hide or curled on the floor of the viv

I do not have a coastal but my jungles, all of them spend more time perched than on the floor. I don't even have hides in 4of 5 of their enclosures because they don't use them, ever! We love our jungles.

I have both plus a Jungle x Jag which is a cross between the two.
I break it down for you.
Jungle 12 years old down on the bottom most of the time.
Coastal 3 years old always on perch.
Diamond x Jungle 4 years old 80% of his time on the perch.
Jungle x Jag 3 years old 90% of his time on perch.

So basically give it some climbing space lol
My coastal is on her perch more than on the floor but not as much as one of my jungles but more than another of my jungles so I would guess it is down to individual snakes as well.

If you want a Python that will stay up in the perch, get a GTP.
