Arrived safe a sound today! Very friendly and curious right out of the bag. Photos do not do the coloration justice. May not be everyone's cup of tea, but I have wanted one of these interesting creatures for years! She is a little over two feet and 9 moths old. Looking forward to caring for and observing this one. The base skin color underneath the scales is black and shows up in interesting places: nostrils, mouth, vent, between scales, etc. What I did not realize is that every scale imperfection looks like a black mite!!-and her scales are very very small.

Very neat species.
Do not see them very often. Had the pleasure of working with a couple a number of years ago. Haven't seen them since!

Aaron, what was the temperament like on the ones you worked with?

Fairly docile. They were in the 6 - 8 foot range. Don't recall much about them, as I said I worked with them so I wasn't the regular caregiver, just on occasion.

They're wonderful snakes...and very impressive when they're 14 feet.

Thanks for the nice words guys. Derek, I have seen some that large and they are impressive but the space they occupy is much smaller then say a retic. Having said that, however, I am certainly not going to "hurry" her to 15 feet!;)

I've always loved these guys. When i was on the Darkside Reptile site before it shut down there was a lady with three of them. She would post pictures of herself hold them quite a bit. The biggest one was around 12 feet if i remember correct. She said the were mellow for the most part. Just had to be extra careful at feed time and a couple days after. That one thing i remember her saying was her and her boy friend could not walking the snake room after feeding for a couple days or one of them would strike at the cage door. But on a side note she did get them as adults. With yours being so young it give you time to work with them.

Marvel freak,
Anxious to see what feeding response is like. Hopefully I will not have to stay out of the room!

She said they never seen snake stay in feed mode so long. I do recall her boyfriend saying after a couple month's they up the food size and that seemed to help.
Can't wait to see more picture once it settles in. You should do like "my yellow anaconda" thread and up date this thread every few month's. That way we can all see how she progresses. :):):)

Hey, the guy I bought her from said she did not get over 5 feet!! :Wow:
Just kidding. Wow that looks like a beautiful and well taken care of animal. That appears to be the eastern New Guinea variety with the longer snout- or is it just me. Thanks for the beautiful photo. Very nice!

Looks like a 10 footer. There is a longer snout Pappy. I guess it is less common.

Sorry for the late response, but I just started researching Papuan pythons. I believe the lady is holding an Olive python (Liasis olivaceus.) That's a different snake than what the original poster posted, which is a Papuan Python (Apodora papuana.) I guess there was enough difference between them that the latter got its own genus.

Sublimeballs,
Thanks for your interest. Pappy is doing fine and here are a couple photos, she was not in the posing mood. She is about 5 feet long now and 560 grams. She does not miss a meal but will not gorge herself either; after consuming about 50 grams of rodent she will eat no more- obviously keeping an eye on her figure! She is mild mannered typically, but can be cage defensive. Also, a couple hours after eating, it is best to stay clear. A joy to handle, but she is always on the move. Although she is destine to get large, she does not occupy much space (not a Burm). She is the most observant of my snakes (including my Retic) and if I stare into her cage, she will often times respond by sticking her head out of her hide to stare back. She always knows what is going on in the room, that is for sure. I hope to provide better photos this summer to mark her two year update.

Man I love these! Once day I'll either have one of these or an aussie olive. Anyone have experience with both that could shed some light on there differences?
Wow, very neat!! Please continue to post updates on her as she grows... She is lovely!

What a great looking snake with beautifully subtle colors. I'm not sure that I'd want a snake that gets to 15 feet long, but I really like to coloration and body shape of the Olives.

Beautiful girl. I'm insanely jealous!
I'd love one of these but they aren't easy to source here (I know a few keepers with them but they aren't breeding age yet)
I've kept olives previously and keep other liasis now.
Are they similar to olives then in the fact they don't need to be fed as often? My Olive (liasis) only ate 4 times a year and I have a macklotts who fasts for 5 months of the year!
Have you managed to see the colour changes in her yet?

Thanks for all your nice comments guys.
She eats weekly but only about 5-7% of her bodyweight. She is still a youngster, but very slow growing. Yes her color change is beautiful and seems to associated with temperature. Much more observing to do on the color change, but sometime she is very green, sometimes a dark brownish, and other almost a mustard color. I do not have the camera or the skills to record these changes on film- for live observation only!

Thanks Millertime,
She is not terrible, but glade to hear they typically mellow with age. So hopefully in ten years I will have a mellow 12 foot snake!
