These guys decided today was the day.

The mom was the one I had incubating golf balls and sure enough when I went to look at her after I notice the babies.....she had left the balls and stopped shivering. Very interesting.

Anyway, here they are.....after 25 years of maintaining the bloodline.

Yeah, the golf ball experiment was interesting. Esp the fact that she stopped the maternal instinct after the eggs pipped.
She was in another room separated by 3 walls. Very cool.

Funny but, I almost lost the line a few times. I sold them off 2 separate times and, got them back from the people I sold em to. Won't do that again. haha.

very cool indeed mate.....

SEPARATED by 3 walls  wow mate that makes it all the more interesting,i thought she may have been located where she could see the eggs pipping

you were lucky to get the bloodline back after selling them twice, glad to hear you have no more plans of selling them on

cheers shaun

^^^^^

What is the golf ball story?

Derek took her clutch of eggs from the mother and substituted them with golf balls,to see if she would maternally incubate the golf balls,as she would her eggs...

once her clutch of eggs pipped in a seperate room, she stopped shivering around the golf balls

snakes will shiver, have muscle spasims,in order to raise their body temperature,to raise heat while incubating their eggs

cheers shaun

Indeed an interesting story on the golf balls. My first guess was pheromones/smell of egg material being released after pipping, but separated by three walls makes that very unlikely. A maternal clock of some sorts would then be my next guess, but then you would expect her to be off by some days, unless this was then a lucky coincidence. Hope that people can replicate this finding. If the switch from maternal to normal behaviour always stops immediately after the eggs hatch, distance based experiments (animals located miles away from their eggs upon hatching?) would be very interesting :). Anyone else has any ideas on how the mother 'knew' the eggs were hatching?
