View Full Version : Carpet Python Night Time Temp Drop?
Do any carpet owners drop the temps at night time and if so what do you drop it to?

Mine naturally drops about 5 degrees. Right now the day is so hot basking temps easily get to 90-95 with my 40 watt bulb on a dimmer set to low. At night things cool down to about 85-90 basking spot. Ambient air temps also drop 5 degrees. If it gets too cold then ill just bump the power to high on my dimmer. Usually consistent.
It's easier to use a proportional thermostat with a day/night setting. Because no matter the weather outside the enclosure, the thermostat will always keep it at the temp you set it to.

Does it not depend on locale somewhat? Diamonds tend to be able to tolerate / live in colder temps no?

My new stat is a pulse stat (or dimmer or on/off the choice is up to the user) and I am going to be setting night time temp drops for the first time. I was thinking a drop of 5 deg but C so to about 80F but I didn't know if it is to low or not.

Yes diamonds do live in colder temps and I believe it is more critical to keep the correct temps with them all year round including cooling over the winter whereas with other carpets if you want you can keep them heated 24/7 365 days a year. I am just trying to replicate a more natural temperature cycle for them in their new vivs so just tweaking the temps over the next few days to get it where it needs to be.

I don't heat at night... My heat goes off from 9pm till 6am. Residual heat in the enclosure is enough for them, I use wooden enclosures though.

and you live in Australia which is just a tad warmer than over here ;)
Do you know roughly what temp it drops down to in the night?

I'm in Melbourne it is currently 12C outside... the temps get as low as 15C overnight in the enclosure in winter (possibly lower to 10C some days). Summer temps drop to about 20-25C. It's a gradual cooling though and those temps are measured just before the heating turns back on for the day.
Cheers for the info, the new vivs I have are 18mm thick melamine and hold the heat pretty well so I might switch them off one night and see how low they go.
You may be 12C now but it is your winter, I would be happy with 12C for 3 days in a row and its our summer (we have just had the coldest spring for 50 years :()

Upper 70s F is fine for carpets but I always keep a hotspot incase they want to get warmer. Hotspot at night is 85. The rest of the enclosure for my jungle is 75-80.

using a timer i cut the power at night during spring and summer, letting the ambient room temperature dictate the night time temps
autum and winter i provide night time heat, set around high 60F to low 70F
cheers shaun

None of my animals get heat at night. why? Where would they get heat at night in the wild?
Yes, maybe a warm road etc but, overall....they are subject to the temps the environment provides.
Sun goes down....lights/heat goes off. Sun comes up.....they come on.
I've kept animals like this all my life and never had any problems.
Now, keep in mind....I live in Florida. But, that should make no difference as most of us keep our snakes inside in a controlled environment anyway.
Room temp is fine at night.

Cheers for all the replies

Same temps and gradient day and night here for my coastal, all of my snakes (mostly pythons) kept the same way.
