Garter foods?

Just a quick question. What are some good staples or even some unusual foods that you can feed to your garter? Minnows and maybe slugs are some, am I right?

Wayne you got me looking into researching the garters...lol

Re: Garter foods?

common foods accepted by most garters....

fish - live guppies, silver minnows or sliced up frozen fillets of Tilapia, Trout or Salmon.
Earthworms - Canadian night crawlers are best, red wigglers are toxic.
Pinky mice/fuzzy mice and rare large females can consume whole adult mice.

Garter goulash - I make this by chopping up frozen pinkies and frozen fish together, then crush reptomin sticks into powder and mix a little in. Young garters gobble this mush up and the reptomin causes rapid growth.

That about covers the common.

Certain species of garters will accept slugs, but it's rare.

They love amphibians, toads, frogs, newts & salamanders.. BUT catching amphibians in the wild as a source of food for your captive snakes is unwise, they are loaded with parasites like flatworms that will use your snake as the new host, so we try and avoid these as food for captive snakes.

Re: Garter foods?

Awesome. I will mostly have pinkies or rats for my future snakes but it's good to know that I can give them quite a bit of choice with their foods. Don't know about the fillets or the goulash, but if it's good for them I might want to learn a bit more about it. Like how to even get the ingredients, lol.
