Beast!

Okay so I got a 08 Female Jungle Carpet Python a week ago today (Sunday) and well she strikes at everything and anything. So I will try to take her out and she strikes are my hand hundreds of times. I get her out and she strikes at my face and anything around us. I know she is still young. But does anyone know how to some what tame a snake like this, so she isnt like this for the rest of her life??? I just want her to be happy.

Re: Beast!

I can't speak for that species Hillary, but I have a few "extra cranky" snakes, I just plain don't handle them, I take them out to clean the cage, but that's it.

I admire them through the glass, it's all I can do.

Since handling annoys them, it's better for the snake's welfare to leave it alone.

Re: Beast!

My female Jungle Carpet used to strike at anything in range aswell. Every single time I even open the doors, it was a fight, straight away. My initial strategy was to just leave her alone, but to not jump when going in there to water her, I didn`t want her thinking she was bothering me. That worked to a point. As she got bigger and bigger and eventually needed to go in with a huge male Jungle Jag, I had to change tac. I`d go in there at least twice a week and take her out, ignoring the biting. I`d hold on to her being as gentle as possible and not restraining her for about a minute, then put her back in. I wore leather gloves which helped me to stop jumping and feel a little more confident with her. This worked a treat, she`s fine now! I picked her up with no gloves, sure she`s cranky anyway, but no biting, she hasn`t bitten me for ages.... I think confidence is the key, they learn that you`re not going to go away and you`re not going to hurt them if you do it often enough and ignore the biting..... Good luck

Re: Beast!

My baby borneo shed to day for the second time since i got her in oct. I got her out and put her into my back up cage so i could clean hers. She was fine. When i walk back into the room she went nuts. Striking at the glass,at me, at the air, everything. It was so funny until she about got me on the nose. So i grabbed my spray bottle an gave her a light misting of water. She calmed right down. I picked her up put her back in her cage as soon as she was down she started striking at the air again. I waited 4 hours an got her out an she was fine. This was the first she ever struck at anything other than food. I found a light misting can help mellow them when their being aggressive. I can't say it work on all snakes but it as work for me.

Re: Beast!

My Carpets don`t seem to mind that but my Boas are a different story lol I was spraying at the warm end one day to raise humidity for shedding and I accidently got just a few drops of water on the males tail, that`s it, just a tiny bit. He went absolutely potty! lol He charged across the six foot tank, then turned around and went on the attack ! It took a good while for him to calm down too. Maybe he was asleep I don`t know but I won`t be doing that again ! lol

Re: Beast!

Honestly, I have no varification of this other than my own experience, but I find that leaving an article of my clothing in the cage at all times, especially when the snake is younger, helps. I usually leave a tshirt or two on the tank floor, just resting there as something to crawl in/under/on/around. I'm sure I'm personalizing too much but I feel it helps in that it creates the impression that my scent is a passive, non-threatening one.

Next - Leather Gloves and a thick, either thermal or flannel, long sleeve shirt! Having confidence and not worrying as much about the bites will make it easier for you to take the steps to calm the snake

If the snake should be curled up in one of the shirts in the tank, take that out with the snake, I have found it helps keep them calmer when taken out with the shirt keeping contact.
The shirt almost becomes your "hook" that you can train the snake on in cases where it is resting on the shirt. One way to do this is to put the shirt under the hide or on the area the snake likes the bask the most.

Hope this helps!

Re: Beast!

I forgot to mention,, I don`t know if your snake will be the same obviously but most of my Boas and Pythons will stay in thier water dish if I remove them from the tank while they`re still in it. If it`s a bit of a nightmare working in the tank with her in there that may help you a little..... if she`s in the water dish of course

When i do it it's always when they're be aggressive. It seem to clam them down. I never spray them unless moving around. That way i know their awake. Then after spraying them i always pick them up. This way even if they're in a pissy mood they know i am going to handle them. If you leave them alone everytime they strike or act aggressive, before you know it they'll do it all the time. I found the key is never show fear,( be confidence), always follow threw with what your doing,(handleing, cleaning cage, or whatever), and when they act up give them a little spray. Like i said before i can say it'll work on all snakes, but it always worked for me.

Re: Beast!

Yeah that`s absolutely right that is, the second you change your mind about doing something because they`re being aggressive, they`ll learn that that`s what they need to do to make you go away. A lesson learned very early by my parrot lol s**t if she was venomous we`d all be dead by now in my house !! lol hahahaa I trust my angry Blood python more than I trust her ! At least he`s predictable ! lol

Re: Beast!

Like I said, Leather Gloves + Long Sleeve shirt/jacket. Eventually you can work your way down to barehanded in a t-shirt
