I start off by reading a book or article so that I have a foundation (and dont sound too dumb) before talking to other herpers/breeders. I never bother with pet shops unless they specialize in reptiles, as they often preach nonsense. I find most books to be either too technical (scientific names for every molecule in the snake) or too general (snakes shed their skin and are not slimy, kiddies). The best source of information is the internet, there are excellent articles out there like Melissa Kaplan's site, NERD, etc. and forums like this one.

Since it has been brought up that books tend to get to get outdated. In the years I have been keeping reptiles. I have seen things come back again that went out of favor. And if you talk with breeders taht have been doing this for years. Most will tell you that things seem to work in cycles. I said this to support the fact that books make a great base for knowledge. Yes somethings go out of date or just out of the trend. But overall you cannot beat the information that is available through them. Where do you think that the majority of the people on the internet got their information? My guess is books.
