Theft at Richmond Super Pet - please help

Hello all,

Recently, a juvenile hognose and a young cornsnake were stolen from the store I work at.

The western hognose was just recently purchased from Port Credit, and was no longer than 6"...if that. The corn was also very young. It was abberently patterned with a stripe going from the head down probably the first 1/4 to 1/3 of its body. Normal coloring.

The woman who stole the animals was very overweight, had dark, shaggy, straight hair tied back in a ponytail. She wore what looked to be a jersey and also a baseball cap. She was very quick and knew what she was doing...obciously she's been at this before. On our cameras, she checked everything (including parrots!) for proper locks. Unfortunately, these tiny snakes were unable to be placed in enclosures that could go under lock and key.

These two snakes were my personal favorites in the store. Especially the corn, who needed a bit of extra TLC when it came in. Though it wouldn't be much, I would try my hardest to personally reward anyone who can lead to the snakes' return.

If you have any information, you can PM me or email me at youkai@shaw.ca.

Or, preferably, call me at home at: (604) 737-2587
Or, call the Richmond Super Pet at: (604) 214-1306

Thank you,

Jen

Too bad you can't post a pic, in case someone recognizes her!

I was thinking of taking pictures of all our animals for JUST this very reason - and just hadn't got around to it yet.
I would easily recognize the corn, however. And I'm sure if someone was selling both animals matching this description it would be obvious....

Unfortunately, the theif looks down the whole time and is also wearing a cap. She's obviously done this kind of thing before.

I've been emailed by a few people saying the same thing...so hopefully I have a lead. Thanks all, truly appreciated.

I think this person came into my store tonight

I had a lady come into my store this evening (after closing) I usually stay late when I get a chance. This person is well known in our community and most of us business owners keep a close eye on her (and hubby) although they seldom come into a business together. Her name is ******* ******(spelling???) Her hubby and her came in looking at our reptile enclosures and spoke to me about some of the different critters they have. Since they new I have a 5 foot Corn snake and several other animals in my store they asked if I would be interested in purchasing a few snakes from them , what they don't know is 1st off I am an animal rescue so I NEVER buy animals of ANY kind. 2nd we got corney (our corn snake) about 3 years ago from a little boy that was selling it because his mom wouldn't allow him to keep it. We agreed to buy the tank etc... if they would agree to GIVE us the snake... This is really the only knowledge I have of snakes so when they listed off they kinds of snakes they had the only one that stuck out was the young corn snake. I said I would be happy to take it in on rescue but that we would NOT buy the snakes, they assured me that they would be able to sell the snakes at any number of stores and indeed were not interested in just surrendering them. I tried to get there phone number incase I could somehow find someone that would be interested but they left without giving it to me (although they did agree) so hopefully they will come back tomorrow and I will ask to see the snakes. And get a number. The problem is I don't know enough about snakes to tell specific breeds so all I can do is hope to give a good enough description that you may be able to confim if it's possible that these are your snakes. )Perhaps I'm being peranoid... not sure... but heck, it sure would be nice if it turned out to be the same person. She sure does match your description!

What an odd thing to be klepto about. A corn and a hognose, both normal? Seems like a silly risk to take for something that she couldnt make a grandeous profit on. Maybe she really is klepto. Anyways- best of luck- and while the forum is awesome, Id ring up some other local LPS's and talk to them, they may not use this forum, and might also be able to help you. I wish you the best of luck! You need to stock some hots, and label em as some colubrid! That'll fix her!

Actually, Artemis, that's a great idea....
Youkai, why don't you post this under the cornsnake forum and hognose forum on this site? I'm sure the people there will be more likely to know exactly what to look for.
Also WHEN were these snakes stolen? Just in the last couple of days... or... ???
Take care

Good idea, I will post in other forums.

The snakes were just stolen very recently, maybe 4 days ago, 5 at the most.

What a horrible/stupid thing for her to do. On a note (it's good and bad)..... she will need to sell these quick, cuz I am guessing they have no idea how to take care of them!

Those 2 snakes are worth $150 max private, if they actually find someone to take the "mystery snakes". I don't know how they would sell them, i only buy private from people i know off here!

Maybe they are standing on the street corner asking people if they want to buy a watch.... no watch? what about a snake?
I hope she is caught and after her time in jail, she can spend half an hour in an enclosure with a 16 foot crazy retic. Maybe she'll think twice about stealing something alive.

Oddly enough people go to jail for relatively minor crap while other people who commit serious crimes walk free all the time.

Got a digital camera? Snap a pic of them with the snake. Just say that you know someone who might want to buy it

Doubt that this is the work of someone who does't know about reptiles. Which thief would wanna reach into a cage with a snake in it? Especially species which are not very expensive. Sounds to me like someone who wanted those snakes for herself and couldn't come up with the cash.

Or anyone that knows that a lot of snakes are traded privately and are virtually untraceable.
