Het for R*tarded

I got some questions about possible hets. What the heck are they? How could something be pissible het??? Makes no sense, you should know if something is a het or not. But even if it's "possible" why would someone pay extra money for it? You could be paying 150$ more bucks for something that isn't what you're hoping for. then you got screwed over on a normal. So why would anyone buy one? Seems really ********. And then if it's "possible" anyone can sell a normal of as possible het for piebald or something. Not because they know its relatives are piebalds, but because in reality, it is remotely possible that it just may be het. However far out that it. So anyone could just make it up knowing that their just making it up, and be right in doing so. This all makes no sense, can someone explain?

It's hard to explain but I'll try. I know someone else will come on and explain it better. I think it's when you cross a het with a normal. There's a chance that the babies might carry the het gene but there's also a chance that they might not. Until you breed the animal you have no way of knowing whether they picked up the gene or not so they become "possibles". Normally people don't charge very much for a "possible". I hope this clears it up for you.

I agree with you serpent-king, even though I fully under stand possible hets. I do not raise the price on my babies if they are possible hets but I will let the person know about it. IMHO it's just a way to make a quick buck on a slim chance.

Because you could ALSO be paying like 10% of what you would normally pay for a full-on het. People prove out possibles all the time. Its very lucrative.

As for being dumb for buying one? Man, you know nothing of the market. Having a male 100% het and 3-5 female possible hets will usually yield full on homozygous morph babies. Its nuts. and for like 1/3 the cost of just buying a pair of hets! Serious breeders do it all the time. Tell them that they are dumb when they are making $80K a year off of possible hets. I dare you.

I really see them as usefull only on very expensive morphs.
A 'possible 50% het' has a 1 in 2 chance of being a 100% het.
A 'possible 66% het' Has a 2 in 3 chance of being a 100% het.
If I buy a 100% het male, and a number of 'possible het females', best case I have the possibility of producing the morph in the F1, worst case I produce '50% possible hets' of my own.
A 100% het piebald ball python can run as much as $4000.
From a business view if I can afford 5 possible het females each with at least a 50/50 chance of being a 100% het for the price of 1 or 2 100% het females I can in the best case wind up with 5 100% het females and produce numerous of the morph in the F1, the flip side is I wind up with no het females until the F1 generation, but at a minimum investment. For most other non-high end animals possible hets are of little interest except to the individual breeder and basically run the same price as normals with 100% hets running a little more.

Prove that it's a possible het and we'll talk.... Scam artists go to jail. Honest breeders make friends and money. Which do you sound like?????

Yes anyone can, and many people do. That is why you only purchase hets/possible hets for reputable sources, and make sure you have the paperwork to back it up. And nobody that is "just making it up, and be right doing so" is right at all. Its people that do that, that pollute the hobby
