Question High Strung

Well if most of you were keeping up with my "Insert String of Profanities Thread" you know I'm getting a Ribbon Snake from the pet store for 10$ CAN (used to be 30$ CAN). And before you go into the whole "BUY FROM A BREEDER"...I'm not buying this little fellow for breeding or quality. He is quite cute but I'm buying him because the poor thing has been there for at LEAST six months that I remember. I'd like to give the little fellow a good home to come to.

Anyways, the reason he hasn't been sold is because whenever someone's interested and takes it out of the cage. He's very high strung. I know they're energetic, but you know how some snakes who are nervous and the likes squirm around alot and just don't want to be held...that's how he's like.

I've never had a snake that isn't calm. Any pointers on handling and trying to tame him down a bit? I honestly don't mind if he stays nervous, as I said, he needs a good home and I can provide it. All I wanted was the satisfaction of knowing that I'm taking him to a good place instead of someone buying him on an impulse because he's cheap.

So any pointers on handling a high strung snake? Taming? Etc. I look forward to hearing them.

Jenn

PS. I decided to name him/her "Jade"

Try handling him often be soft and move slow. Don't hold tight lwt him know that he not going to be hurt. Do this 4 times a day for 15-30 mins. Wait till after the first feeding to begin the process you have to let it get used to the new home, if not it will get stressed. Hope that helps and good luck you are a very good person and I admirew you for that.[not in a sexual way]

*giggles* I like being admired! lol

Ok I'll take your advice. I'll give Jade some time to get used to the new surroundings. Try feeding him and then start the handling process.

Thanks

Jenn

Okay I'm confused, are you going out with anyone in your post you talk about your ex-BF but the way you talk about him does't make him sound like an ex. I hope you don't mind this question I was just wondering. your welcome to, and I hope your Jade becomes a good snake, personally I like them a little "high strung." I can't wait to see the pix of your little guy/girl is it unsexed

Yeah it's unsexed. So I just call it a boy. Just like I call montey a girl...and Jason is my ex boyfriend, and I'm going out with Derek my current. Jason and I are still good friends though.

The only thing I would add is make sure the snake feels secure in it's tank. Lots of hide boxes, etc.

Congrats on deciding to take him. My Rosy Boa was a biter when I first got him, any time you tried to handle him he'd bites and constrict for 15 minutes at a time. My dealt with it (I'm too wussy) and after about 4 days he stopped biting. It should be even easier with this guy! Good luck, post pictures when you can,.

Jenn, this is what I did to tame my Burm. Don't know if it'll work for the little one but you can try it. Snakes like things that are familiar and comfortable, so when I got Bandula I immeadiately placed him inside a quiet enclosure with a t-shirt I had worn for at least a day. My scent was on the shirt so from the get-go he associated my smell with a nice quiet place. He was very easy to handle after a few days. (The first few days he was scared, and that was probably due to the fact he'd just been dumped on a college campus... scary place for a snake)! I have never had a problem with him since.

Since yours is a smaller snake, the technique deffinately couldn't hurt, so think about trying it. I know it sounds weird, but I know a lot of people who have done the same as me and gotten similar results. Also, since this is a relatively small and delicate species Jade may always be a little nervous, (part of being a little guy) but once you guys get to know each other I'm sure everything will be fine! Good luck and keep us updated!
