If he is truely not feeling well I'd advise a vet visit. If he has an infection in his toe, he will need oral antibiotics.
The best place to check to see if your dog is too warm and may have a fever is the inside of the ear.
This is not always true also.
I agree the dry warm nose thing is a myth. A dog's normal temperature is 101.5- 102.5 degrees F.
