Dangerous snakes confiscated from home in Avon

AVON, IND. -- Conservation officers seized two dangerous snakes from a home west of Indianapolis and may seek misdemeanor charges against the couple who owned them.

A Hendricks County animal-control officer found the snakes Nov. 19 when she went to David and Dawn Hardwick's property in the suburb of Avon to investigate a complaint about a dog.

Officers from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources later obtained a search warrant to seize the snakes, an African puff adder and a timber rattlesnake.

The rattlesnake was still alive, but Dawn Hardwick said the couple killed the 22-pound puff adder by putting it in the freezer.

"We were going to polyurethane it and use it as a door stop," she explained.

Conservation officers said it is illegal to possess the reptiles, even if they are dead.
